As we near the end of yet another successful year at the SAME Washington DC Post, we can look back with pride and look forward with renewed excitement. A year ago I said that "an opportunity was within our grasp" to reach higher levels of success and challenged you to "get engaged and help make it happen." Well, you did. As a result we've surpassed our goals and objectives for 2005 because of your fantastic support and contributions, as we ardently continue to uphold the Society's mission Support to Our National Defense! Thank you! You all have done a great job this year. You grasped the opportunity and met the challenge. Success!

We look back on the progress we've made during the course of 2005 with pride, and with purpose: to acknowledge our successes, assess where we are, and evaluate where to go next.

At the SAME national level, the Washington DC Post supported the visions of General Fox and then Admiral Loose, our Society's Presidents, by tailoring the Washington DC Post goals and objectives with those of the National SAME Strategic Plan. From increasing the relevance and diversity of our programs and public sector participation in the Society, to supporting our deployed engineering teams and their families, and many other accomplishments; we made positive contributions to the vision and mission of the entire society.

At the Washington DC Post level, we made excellent contributions to and added valuable benefits for our members, we made impressive community outreach initiatives come to fruition, and improved our already stellar readiness, mentoring, communications, recognition, and scholarship programs. We also made exceptional contributions in support of our industry and have been an organization of value to our members.

The SAME Washington DC Post 2005 vision was to achieve the Top Post recognition. All indications point to achieving that vision this year. This achievement is not only the accumulation of accomplishments in 2005, but all accomplishments in years past that have led up to this recognition. The SAME Washington DC Post will be judged with all other SAME Posts, in the large Post category. If selected, this will be an outstanding achievement for the SAME Washington DC Post that will truly reflect the significant contributions and efforts made by all of our members and specifically our officers, board of directors, and committee chairs.

Some SAME Washington DC Post accomplishments in 2005 include the following:

  • Hosted programs of high interest to our members (BRAC and Service Chief Engineer briefings).
  • Held a professional training seminar that awarded Professional Development Hours (PDH) for those that attended.
  • Initiated our Post involvement in "Project Lead The Way" (High School program with an engineering focus).
  • Increased our individual and sustaining member firm memberships.
  • Launched a successful one-on-one mentoring program.
  • Participated in an outreach program to support our Deployed Engineering Team.
  • Held a recognition ceremony for representatives of our deployed troops to let them know we care.

These and many other accomplishments in 2005, and during the last few years, have brought the SAME Washington DC Post into the spotlight - a modest spotlight that shows a model Post in the Society of American Military Engineers.

As we peek into next year's initiatives, we see continuing the opportunities for professional development seminars to add value for our members, enhancing our mentoring program, increasing the number of scholarships we award, bringing the high school project Lead The Way Program up to full speed, and increasing our memberships further.

The SAME Washington DC Post 2006 Officers and Directors are a strong team of dedicated volunteers, from military, public, and private sectors, who are looking forward to continue the successes and professionalism of the SAME Washington DC Post.

It has been an honor to serve as President of this fantastic post during 2005. I'm thankful for this wonderful opportunity and will continue to contribute to it's successes in the future.

Thank you for your support this year and best wishes for a prosperous 2006. God bless America!
