Post President's Message Archive

As the end of my term as 2006 DC Post President comes to a close, I look back on the progress we've made during the course of year with pride. I extend a special thank you to all of you who supported our activities, and especially to the members of the DC Post Board of Direction for their guidance and support. In 2006 we focused heavily on:

  1. Broadening our membership base,
  2. Increasing our scholarship fund,
  3. Continuing our legacy of excellent membership programs, and
  4. Expanding our education outreach initiatives.

We are very pleased to have increased the participation of local construction companies and supporting industries in the Post. Your involvement has added a new dimension to our Post during this critical time of regional military transformation and BRAC activity.

Some of the scholarship and educational accomplishments of 2006 of which we are very proud included:

  • Our Inaugural Scholars and Honors Gala that raised $5OK+ for expansion of our Scholarship Program
  • Honoring Murphy Tuomey with the establishment of a named scholarship the Murphy Tuomey/A. Morton Thomas & Associates Annual Scholarship.
  • Increasing our scholarship fund to it's highest level ever over $600K.
  • Developing the framework to double our scholarship awards over the next 5 years.
  • Sponsoring a local university student for the SAME/ASCE Leadership Conference.
  • Sponsoring 2 local high school students at the SAME engineering summer camps.
  • Conducting on-site visits at local construction projects for local high school students.
  • Continuing our Post involvement in "Project Lead The Way" (High School program with an engineering focus).

Our legacy of excellent programs continued unimpeded as we:

  • Hosted 12 programs of high interest to our members (military transformation, BRAC, Industry Day Forums, etc.).
  • Provided conference support of the Tri-Services DC Region BRAC Industry Forum.
  • Hosted a very well received DC Mega-Projects lunch meeting presented by several of our member companies.
  • Held a professional training seminar jointly with CMAA that awarded Professional Development Hours (PDHs) on the use of new Building Information Modeling (BIM) Technology.

And we:

  • Increased our corporate sponsorship to its highest level ever.
  • Held a recognition ceremony for military service representatives of our deployed troops to let them know we care.
  • Were cited as a 2005 SAME Distinguished Post.

The SAME Washington DC Post 2007 Officers and Directors are a strong team of dedicated volunteers from military, public, and private sectors, who look forward to continuing the successes and professionalism of the SAME Washington DC Post. I am pleased to announce that 2007 will first time in some years that the DC Post top three officers are all from the unformed services:

Post President: Col. Ben Pina, P.E. US Navy

1st Vice President: Col. John Elwood, P.E. USAF, Air National Guard

2nd Vice President: Cmdr. Nelson Mix, P.E. CHMM, US Public Health Service

It has been an honor to serve as President of your prestigious Post during 2006. It was very exciting to have worked with our great Board of Direction, the 2011 National Conference proposal, our various activities, and to initiate and emcee our Inaugural Scholars and Honors Gala - the second of which is scheduled for 15 September 2007 at the Mayflower Hotel (mark your calendars).

Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity and I plan continue to contribute to it's successes in the future.

Thank you for your support this year and best wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2007. Peace to the world and God Bless America!
