Partnerships Build Success
As President of the Washington DC Post I am in awe of the incredible commitment of our members to our post, society, industries, and to our nation. I am honored to serve in this position and am thrilled to work with such a dedicated group of volunteers and responsive membership. It's been very exciting to introduce many new members to our post and our society, welcome new post sponsors, meet new challenges and opportunities, and try to exceed your expectations.
We are receiving fantastic response to our 2006 Corporate Sponsorship Drive. Ten (10) new sponsors have joined in the last month, bringing our total this year to an impressive 13 Corporate Sponsors. Your outstanding response comes at a critical time helping our post to offset the loss of membership dues due to the upcoming re-allocation of national SAME membership dues. Your corporate sponsorship helps us maintain the quality of our programs. Thank you!
A very exciting event is coming up in just a few months. Your DC Post Board of Directors accepted my challenge to raise the level of awareness of our scholarship program and increase our scholarship giving by approving the Washington DC Post Inaugural Scholars & Honors Gala, to be held at the Grand Ballroom in the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC on 30 September 2006. I am truly pleased and honored to be working with an unbelievable group of private and public sector committee members who are organizing this event.
Some highlights of the gala planning include:
- A new scholarship that A. Morton Thomas & Associates Inc. will endow in honor of Murphy Tuomey a tireless SAME volunteer. Many of you know of Murphy's diligent pursuit of SAME Scholarship funds and her many other SAME activities. Donations to the Murphy Tuomey/AMT Scholarship Fund are being accepted.
- Gala entertainment provided by Escapades that will entertain all generations of members.
- Raffle drawings that include, for example, two tickets to anywhere in the US, donated by Southwest Airlines.
- Reduced Mayflower Hotel room rates at $169 + tax. The room block is open, so call the hotel as soon as possible, and mention the SAME Gala.
- Recognition of honored guests, Service Chiefs, Murphy Tuomey, and 50-year members. Several Service Chiefs that have already accepted include LTG Strock, RADM Loose, and RADM Barror.
Thanks to all who participated, sponsored, volunteered and helped, and braved the downpours at the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Andrews AFB. We raised over $21K for our Scholarship Program! This is a new record fundraising amount and we thank you. Your contributions help us achieve our new goals to award more students with scholarships and increase the value of each scholarship awarded. Many thanks to James Peck of McDounough Bolyard Peck (MBP), our Golf Tournament Chair, and to MBP for their incredible support of time and commitment.
A note on the results of the SAME DC Post and Northern Virginia Post Joint submission for the 2011 SAME National Conference, at the Gaylord Resort and Spa at National Harbor. Despite an incredible effort by our Joint Post Conference Proposal committee, and an excellent conference proposal and interview, we were not selected to host the national conference in 2011. There are many people to appreciate for this colossal effort, and one of whom deserves a special thanks is Donna Vereb of URS for her outstanding proposal leadership. We greatly appreciate URS Corporation for donating their staff and funding to produce this proposal. A personal thanks to Jim Donohue, Tom Delany, and the Northern Virginia Post for their intensive involvement and the experienced guidance they provided in support of the 2011 proposal team.
Finally, we want to thank Scott Griffin and Gaylord Resorts for their hard work, efforts, and personal attention supporting our 2011 proposal. Their teamwork and hospitality was very much appreciated. The DC and Northern Virginia posts will consider whether or not we will submit a national conference proposal in 2007 for the 2012 national conference. We'll keep you posted!
In closing, I am very proud to be part of so much support, enthusiasm, and commitment to excellence by our members, our community, and our friends in support of the mission of this noble organization.
We have an exciting line up of programs and speakers this summer and the fall will bring our Federal Opportunities Conference and many networking opportunities.
We thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you at future SAME Washington DC Post programs. Have a safe summer.
Michael Pavlides
