Action and Involvement!
It’s hard to believe
summer is upon us,
and we are quickly
approaching the
middle of the calendar
year. Since our
last newsletter we’ve
had some great
lunch programs (on
BRAC and the National
Response
Framework), and another successful golf tournament. I want to thank
all those you participated in those events and especially
the Board of Direction members that helped plan those events!
The Washington DC Post is once again a Distinguished Post!
In March we learned the out post was chosen to be
a 2007 Distinguished Post of the Society! We
earned all the streamers (Education, Outreach,
Readiness, Relationships, and Membership). CONGRATULATIONS
to all of you for making this possible
and special recognition should go to our past
post president for his leadership during this period –
CAPT Ben Pina, USN, CEC!
2008 Sponsorship Drive
I am pleased to announce that several firms have
become sponsors of our post. Sponsorship not only
further recognizes a company, but more importantly
contributes to ensuring Post activities are successful
and this helps the membership. My sincere
thanks to those who took advantage of this! It’s
also still not late to become a sponsor! See the additional
information below.
2008 Focus Areas Update
In January we set a few goals and I’d like to give a
brief update on our progress.
- Establish at least one Washington DC Post Student Chapter at a local university. We have met with two universities about this and are making progress.
- Ease program registration and logistics. We have incorporated new software into our post business processes, resulting in a savings of
time by our sustaining members who support
our Board of Direction and actually put together the programs.
- Better leverage the large number of members in the post through varying the locations of activities. Our May 14 program in White Oak, MD is an example of this.
- Increase committee participation. This is an area of focus that seems to be in continuous need of help from post members. I encourage everyone to participate in one that interests you, as your time permits. Just contact the particular
committee chair and let them know of your interest. Also, please feel free to contact me or a member of the BOD with any suggestions or concerns you may have.
- Continue with our fundraising activities for the Education and Mentoring Fund. Our April 23 Golf outing helped with this! I thank all our sponsors and players who participated!
Machinatores Vitae (Engineering for Life)
This is the US Public Health Service Engineering
Category slogan. Many are familiar with terms like
“Essayons”, “Semper Fi” or “Semper Paratus”.
SAME has the mission to bring people together for
the betterment of National Defense, and anytime
we gather together, we can learn from each other.
It makes us better. In mid April at the 2008 Georgetown
Hoya Battalion Military Ball, I had the opportunity
to present a SAME award to a ROTC cadet, and say some remarks. I said that SAME brought
the services together with the private sector, and
has helped teach me the meaning of the “Purple
Uniform and Jointness”. Learning from and working
with others is one of the most satisfying parts of my
career. I encourage all of you to be active with the
post or whatever interests you, and “Spring into Action”.
I hope to see you future post events.
