S3Scholarship, Sponsorship, and Society
One of the principal objectives of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is to foster scholastic interest among our nation's students in science and engineering, and to provide continuous education and training for our membership, with special emphasis on military applications and national security. The Washington DC Post has a long and proud record of achieving these goals. The SAME Washington DC Post leads initiatives with:
- Active K-12 programs, including site visits to construction projects (to the Pentagon Renovation and Capital Visitor's Center construction sites for example) and involvement with local school programs such as Project Lead The Way.
- Active (monetary) sponsorship programs for high school students at our SAME military engineering summer camps.
- A robust 13-year scholarship program that awards scholarships to worthy science and engineering college students at our local universities including Catholic University, University of Maryland, Howard University, Rensselar Polytechnic University, among many others. Ninety scholarship awardees since 1994, with $110,000 in scholarships have been distributed.
- Joint professional training programs with Construction Management Association of American (CMAA) and other such organizations.
The list above represents but a small fraction of the scholarship, educational, and training initiatives led by our Washington DC Post that accomplishes these initiatives each and every year. Please see the article inside the February 2006 newletter about this year's Annual Scholarship Award Dinner held February 28 at the Army-Navy Club. Special thanks to the Brott Family for their continued participation with the Paul Brott Scholarship Fund.
The Washington DC Post does not achieve such an enviable record without the personal determination, monetary contribution, and active volunteers of our membership - both individuals and corporations alike. To all of you who are and have been involved, our sincere thanks is only topped by the personal satisfaction you receive by being involved.
And to our corporate members who are annual post sponsors ($1,000 per year) and also who sponsor our many fundraising events, we thank you and hope you see that we are being good stewards of your many contributions. We are currently beginning our annual Corporate Sponsor Drive please consider being a sponsor in 2006.
So don't be square but be cubed, S3 that is, get involved, contribute, and be part of a Society that is making a difference.
Michael Pavlides
