Soaring Expectations
The SAME Washington DC Post held its Inaugural Scholars and Honors Gala on September 30th, at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC. The Gala was nothing short of resounding success! With support from our Individual and Sustaining Members, Gala Sponsors and advertisers, the SAME Washington DC Post raised over $50,000 for the Post’s Scholarship Program. Special thanks to our very entertaining Keynote Speaker - Coach Karl Hobbs, of the George Washington University’s Colonials Men’s Basketball Team. And a big THANK YOU to our Gala Committee, our Gala Sponsors, and to Dr. Bob Wolf – our SAME Executive Director for conducting a rousing Live Auction of the Turks and Caicos Vacation Package donated by Avila Government Services, Inc. – with a $3500 bid won by Skanska.
The Gala featured a special Scholarship Dedication in honor of Murphy Tuomey, a long time supporter of SAME and the Washington DC Post, for her outstanding service and for her many contributions to our scholarship program. A new Washington DC Post Annual Scholarship is now established in her name – the Murphy Tuomey/A. Morton Thomas Scholarship endowed by A. Morton Thomas and Associates. The first Murphy Tuomey Scholarship will be awarded in 2007. In addition, it was a wonderful honor to have BG Lustig, US Army (Ret.), and his lovely wife with us for the evening who was recognized as our 50-year distinguished member. We also had two of this year’s Student Scholarship Recipients present with us that evening.
We also extend a note of thanks to the following individuals for their support of and participation in the Gala:
- MG Ronald Johnson, USACE Deputy Commanding General
- RADM Dale G. Gabel, P.E., USCG Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics
- RADM Barror, Ph.D, P.E., USPHS Chief Engineer
- Col. William Albro, PE, Director of Installations and Mission Support and the Civil Engineer for the Air National Guard for their support and participation in the evening.
