Over 2,000 People Attended Washington DC Post Programs in 2006!
Tri-Service Industry Day
(5 December 2006)
Over 200 SAME members and guests attended the full day Industry Day at the
Fairview Park Marriott, in Falls Church, VA. The Tri-Service Industry Day
included sessions with presentation by USACE, Air-Force and the Navy
representatives. Presentations focused on the workloads for the individual
services and how they convey business. Services represented identified
innovative methods required to accomplish the workload. The Industry Day was
an excellent opportunity for the services to obtain market research and
become familiar with the firms that are interested in their mission.
Presenters at Industry Day included: Dr. James W. Wright, Ph.D., P.E., Chief
Engineer and Director for Capital Improvements, NAVFAC HQ; Kurt W. Kuhn, RA
Head of Design and Construction, Naval Facilities Engineering Command
(NAVFAC) Washington; James R. Jones, P.E., PMP Deputy District Engineer for
Programs and Project Management, Chief, Programs and Project Management
Division, USACE - Baltimore District; and Ms. Anne Rathmell Davis Deputy
Commander, Navy Installations Command.
Washington DC Post Holiday Party and Military Recognition Program
Over 100 SAME members attended the annual DC Post Holiday program and
recognition of our deployed troops at the Fairview Park Marriott, in Falls
Church, VA. In addition to celebrating the Holiday Season, the Washington
DC Post recognized members of our military that have been deployed in AORs
around the world. It is a small gesture to recognize and thank the members
of our Armed Forces for their service to our nation. In addition, the DC
Post held its annual Toys for Tots drive at the Holiday program, collecting
many toys for needy children for the holidays in our region. We thank all
of you for your contributions, as they will bring many smiles to children in
our area during the holidays. Thank you!
Battle Stations 21 Project
(9 November 2006)
Over 60 SAME members and guests attended this excellent program at the
Washington Navy Yard in Washington DC. CAPT Hugh Hemstreet, PE, Operations
Officer, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, gave an excellent
presentation that spotlighted the challenges and solutions encountered on
this unique $82.5-million 156,896-sq-ft steel framed two-story multi-use
project, featured in ENR, and now under construction. The presentation
included designing in chaos, integrating high-tech pyrotechnics, special
effects, and managing the sometimes diverse perspectives of the
entertainment, construction and training industries and the Navy.
Emerging Technologies: The Practical Application of 4D Scheduling
This program, that was attended by more than 50 SAME members and guests, and
held at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington DC, was hosted by the SAME
Washington DC Post and the CMAA NCC. The program presentations introduced
emerging technology that will enhance project delivery. A panel of speakers,
including a construction manager, an owner, and from academia, will present
their perspectives on the features and benefits of this technology - including case study applications, with focus on schedule analysis, communications, constructability, and decision making. By engaging audience
participation, the seminar will also seek to explore current perceptions of
4D technology applications and potential advancements in service delivery.
The speakers were Stephen Hagans, Project Knowledge Center and GSA; John
Messner, PhD, The Pennsylvania State University.
Annual Federal Opportunities Industry Day

Over 200 SAME members and guests attend the SAME Washington DC Post's Annual Federal Opportunities Industry Day. Will Colston, Deputy Directory, Design and Construction, Overseas Building Operations, US Department of State, Jim Jones, Director, Project Management, Baltimore District, US Army Corps of Engineers, Kurt Kuhn, Planning Director, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Washington, and Mary Ellen Seale, US Department of Homeland Security gave excellent program overview and upcoming federal opportunities presentations.
Inaugural Scholars & Honors Gala

The Inaugural Washington DC Post Scholars and Honors Gala took place on 30 September 2006 at the world renowned Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC. This sold out event, organized to raise funds for the DC Post's Scholarship Program, raised over $50K. For a recap and spotlight photo album please visit the Scholars and Honors Web page. DHS Preparedness Programs

Presenter: George Foresman, Under Secretary for Preparedness Directorate,
Department of Homeland Security
gave an excellent presentation on DHS Preparedness Programs. This was an excellent program attended by over
80 SAME members and guests that was held at the Conference Center
Washington Navy Yard in Washington DC.
Anti Terrorism/Force Protection Initiatives & Base Development Opportunities

Steve Iselin, Director of Base Development and Anti Terrorism/Force Protection, NAVFAC gave an excellent presentation on Anti Terrorism/Force Protection initiatives and Base Development Opportunities. The program was held on 27 July at the Washington Navy Yard, in Washington DC. Over 100 SAME members and guests attended the program.

presentation on the Aircraft Maintenance Hangar Complex for HMX-1 at
Quantico Marine Corps Base. And Ed Feiner, AIA, F.SAME, Director,
Nationwide Government Program and Rod Garrett, AIA, Skidmore, Owings &
Merrill LLP gave a first-rate presentation on the Patent and Trade
Office, Alexandria, VA.

Combat Engineering Program

The SAME Washington DC Post held the Combat Engineering program at the Washington Navy Yard on 23 March 2006, that was attended by more than 75 SAME members and guests. Navy Commander Scott Bernotas, who recently returned from overseas, gave an excellent presentation on Military Engineering Projects being conducted in the Region of Bagdad and Fallujah Iraq.

In addition to the Scholarship Recognition Ceremony, RADM Richard Barror, United States Public Health Service (USPHS) gave an excellent presentation on Engineering Opportunities in the Public Health Service, and presented history of the PHS Commissioned Corps and described engineering opportunities, including the COSTEP (Commissioned Officers Student Training Extern Program).
