2011 Washington DC Post Scholarship Recipients
This annual event is made possible with your generous contributions throughout the year, with your sponsorships and support of our Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, and other events that raise funds for our Scholarship Program.
Many thanks to Al O'Konski (URS), SAME Washington DC Post Scholarship Program Chair, for taking the time each year to review nominations received, meet in committee to select the award recipients, and plan the Scholars and Honors Gala.
Also, Jennifer Norton (URS) was instrumental in working out all the logistics for the venue and making sure that this event included all the program elements that were planned for. In addition, we would like to thank all those who organized the DONOR Scholarship Program Reception. Many thanks to Murphy Tuomey (A. Morton Thomas) for her initiative to get the Donor Reception going.
The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is dedicated to:
"actively pursue the educational aspects of the engineering profession, with emphasis on mentoring, student scholarships, high school and college outreach programs, and continued professional development of its membership"
The SAME Washington DC Post is committed to fulfilling this mission statement. Over the past decade we have awarded well over 100 scholarships totaling over $150,000, and through many hours of dedicated fundraising by our members we now have an estimated $700,000 in our Scholarship Fund. Over the past ten years we have also increased our individual scholarship amount from $2,000 to $3,000, and the number of annual scholarship awards from 9 to 12.
The university and college Scholarships awarded each year by the Washington DC Post are made possible by the generous contributions of our individual and corporate members, and your continuous sponsorship and support of our annual DC Post Scholarship Program fundraising events. Our two major fundraising events include our annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, and our Scholars and Honors Gala or Scholarship Awards Dinner. To allow us to continue to fund and expand this program, we encourage your continued support of all of our fundraising events.
The DC Post Scholarship Program Committee organizes the scholarship application process each year by reaching out to regional universities and colleges with curricula in architecture, engineering, science, and construction. The Committee reviews the highly competitive student applications and makes the final selections. Currently we award one-time scholarships each year to 11 or 12 worthy student recipients based on a review of their GPA, activities, achievements, and other factors.
We are also honored that several of our members have been commemorated for their outstanding service to the DC Post by having endowed scholarships in their names including: Paul Brott, Ronald Hubbard, Jerold Kriedler, Linda McCarthy, Murphy Tuomey and Michael Pavlides. You may contribute to any one of these scholarships by contacting any DC Post Officer.
Your feedback, additional volunteers, and contributions are always welcome. Please contact the current DC Post Scholarship Program Committee Chair.
