SAME Washington DC Post Annual Scholarship Dinner

Scholarship Program Chair: Al O'Konski, URS Corporation

The SAME Washington DC Post held it's Annual Scholarship Dinner and Awards Ceremony on 30 March 2005 at the Army Navy Club, Washington DC. Over 100 SAME guests and members attended this marquee event.

Each year the SAME Washington DC Post awards students from area universities with Washington DC Post Scholarships. Our Scholarship Program keeps growing each year, and we are proud to be able to present eight (8) deserving students each with a $1,200 Scholarship Award. We were very honored to have Major General James Cheatham, Acting Director of Military Programs, HQ USACE, assist in the presentation of our Scholarship Awards, and Col. Tony Maida, our Post President (pictured here with our Scholarship Recipients who were able to attend the ceremony in person).

This annual event is made possible with your generous contributions throughout the year, with your sponsorships and support of our Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, and other events that raise funds for our Scholarship Program.

Many thanks to Al O'Konski (URS), SAME Washington DC Post Scholarship Program Chair, for taking the time each year to review nominations received, meet in committee to select the award recipients, and plan the Scholarship Dinner.

Also, Jennifer Norton (URS) was instrumental in working out all the logistics for the venue and making sure that this event included all the program elements that were planned for. In addition, we would like to thank all those who organized the DONOR Scholarship Program Reception. Many thanks to Murphy Tuomey (A. Morton Thomas) for her initiative to get the Donor Reception going.

Many thanks also to Lesley Arnott Rogers and to Stephanie Ruleman (A. Morton Thomas) for their attention to detail, planning and organization. This Reception recognized all of our 2004 Scholarship Donors, both individual and company. Your contributions are so important and so much appreciated. We welcome your continued support and look forward to seeing you at future SAME Washington DC Post Scholarship Dinners.

And of course thank you to Rosalie Kendall (RJA Group) for her support with registration and to Anna Ross for producing publications and spearheading our publicity initiatives. Many other Washington DC Post members supported the program line-up and planning logistics for this evening. James Peck (Programs Chair) and Dan Aide (Sustaining Membership Chair).

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is dedicated to:

"actively pursue the educational aspects of the engineering profession, with emphasis on mentoring, student scholarships, high school and college outreach programs, and continued professional development of its membership"

The Washington DC Post is committed to fulfill this mission statement. Over the years, with many hours of dedicated fundraising, we now have an estimated $300,000 Scholarship Fund. Over the last 10 years, the Washington DC Post has awarded over 70 Scholarships for over $87,000.

In July 2004, the Washington DC Post Board of Directors approved a strategic plan to grow the Washington DC Post Scholarship Program to grow from eight (8) scholarship awards of $1,200 each in 2005 to 10 to 12 scholarships for $2,500-$3,000 each in 2009.

This is an ambitious yet very achievable plan that will make a significant difference in the lives of many engineering and architecture students studying at local area universities. It is also a strong commitment to our industry and profession - one that is essential to ensure our future capability to provide engineering support for our Nation's security.

We thank you for your continued support, for your feedback, for your trust in our strategic planning, and for your support of the Society of American Military Engineers mission - Support to National Defense. Each time we host our Scholarship Dinner, we are reminded of how important it is to make the effort and invest in the younger generation of industry professionals. We were there once and it is important to mobilize and give back as much as we are able to.

The SAME Washington DC Post makes no excuses for pushing forward, trying to do more, exceeding expectations, and striving to undertake strategic initiatives that at first glance may seem too far fetched. But with advance planning, excellent leadership and participation from our Officers and Board of Directors, and from contributions from our members, we are able to move forward in our strategic initiatives and continue to challenge the status quo.

We always welcome your feedback and of course additional volunteers. If you would like to submit your feedback on any aspect of our Post operations, our Post programs or strategic initiatives, or if you would like to volunteer, please visit our web site for additional information and point of contacts at www.sameDCpost.org.

We look forward to seeing you again at future SAME Washington DC Post programs and of course at our 2006 Scholarship Dinner! Thank you for your continued support!
